How To Build A Relationship With An Authorised Dealer

For many watch enthusiasts, purchasing a brand-new Rolex from an Authorised Dealer (AD for short) is the ultimate buying experience. There is a feeling of privilege as for many people, the watches they want are not easy to come by. You cannot simply walk into a Rolex store, ask for the watch you want, purchase it and leave. That would be far too easy. Rather you go into the store, ask for the watch you want, the sales staff will check their availability and you’ll be added to the waiting list, leaving the store with nothing but the AD’s number as you wait for their call. With demand for many Rolex models far exceeding supply, securing highly sought-after watches such as the Submariner, GMT-Master II, Daytona, or certain Day-Date references often requires patience.

While there’s no guaranteed formula for receiving an allocation, building a genuine relationship with a Rolex Authorised Dealer can improve your experience and, in some cases, increase your chances over time.

Here’s what we think you should know.

Why Do Rolex Authorised Dealers Have Waiting Lists?

Rolex produces a significant number of watches each year, but demand for many popular models continues to exceed the supply.

As a result, Authorised Dealers receive limited allocations of certain references, meaning they must decide which customers are offered each watch.

This has led to waiting lists for many of Rolex’s most desirable models, with waiting times ranging from several months to several years depending on the reference and local demand.

Visit Your Local Authorised Dealer

There is often a bit of confusion about what an ‘authorised dealer’ is. Many people use terms such as “I have a good relationship with my AD” or “My AD put me on the waiting list” making people assume that an authorised dealer is a specific person you deal with. In reality an AD is simply an authorised store or retail location that has been granted permission by brands such as Rolex to sell their products at retail prices. For example, Watches of Switzerland, Goldsmiths and Bucherer are all stores that are authorised dealers of Rolex watches. So you go to your local authorised dealer and then you meet the sales team, who will be the people you want to make a good impression with.

Meeting the sales team allows them to understand what you’re looking for and gives you the opportunity to ask questions about different models, sizing, and availability.

Building a relationship is the most important piece of advice. The sales team of the AD are the people who makes the decision on who they’re going to call to get the watch. So go in, be friendly, be polite, ask questions etc. They will also very likely run a background check of your online activity and who you are. If they suspect you are simply buying the watch to flip it for a profit AKA a disguised watch dealer, it’s fair to say you probably won’t be getting a phone call back. They would rather sell to genuine clients who love their watches.

Be Clear About the Watch You Want

One of the most common mistakes buyers make is expressing interest in almost every Rolex model.

Instead, explain exactly which watch you’re hoping to purchase.

Whether it’s a Datejust 41 with a fluted bezel, a GMT-Master II, or a Day-Date 40 in white gold, demonstrating genuine interest in a specific reference helps the dealer understand your preferences.

Should You Buy Other Watches First?

One of the biggest myths surrounding Rolex waiting lists is that you must purchase multiple less desired watches before being offered a sought-after Rolex.

The reality is more nuanced.

Some long-standing clients naturally receive priority because they’ve built a purchasing history over many years. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean new customers cannot receive desirable allocations.

Every Authorised Dealer operates differently, and there is no universal requirement to purchase other items first.

The most important thing is to be genuine, realistic, and build a relationship over time rather than attempting to “game” the system.

The Psychology Of Rolex

Rolex doesn’t just sell luxury watches. It sells the feeling of exclusivity. If the AD wanted to, it could easily get you the watch you are asking for simply by increasing the stock they hold, but Rolex doesn’t want that. They want to make you wait with anticipation, leaving you in a queue for months. Rich people being told NO. The anticipation of the wait makes receiving the final phone call even more satisfying. You are not just buying the watch, you’re buying the feeling of receiving something exclusive, something that others can’t get.

Rolex’s selling strategy is also what feeds the secondary market as people who do not want to wait for their desired watch are forced into the world of watch dealers. Watches in the secondary market often come at a premium price tag, which in turn keeps the AD’s desirable as you feel you are getting an exclusive luxury buying experience with a lower price tag.

There Are No Guarantees

Even if you’ve expressed interest and maintained contact with an Authorised Dealer, there is no guarantee that you’ll receive the exact watch you want within a specific timeframe.

Availability depends on production, local demand, and the allocations the dealer receives from Rolex.

For highly sought-after references, patience is often part of the process.

Is the Pre-Owned Market a Good Alternative?

For buyers who don’t want to wait months or even years, the pre-owned market offers an excellent alternative.

Many of Rolex’s most desirable references are available immediately through reputable specialist watch dealers such as us here at Atlas Watches London.

While pre-owned prices may differ from retail depending on market demand, buyers benefit from immediate availability, a wider choice of references, and access to discontinued models that can no longer be purchased new.

When buying pre-owned, always choose a trusted dealer who thoroughly inspects, authenticates, and stands behind every watch they sell.

How the Pre-Owned Market Works

Firstly, a client will contact us through one of our many contact routes as listed at the end of the blog. The client tells us what they’re looking for and then they leave it up to us to find them their perfect watch. Some watches we will have already in stock and some we will source from our extensive network of other watch dealers. We authenticate every watch and secure the best price possible. Then once we have the watch, you can come in and view it, try it on, ask any questions and buy. We love building a connection with our clients over our shared love of watches and personally, helping people find their perfect watch is why I love my job.

So that’s it. To buy your watch you either have to go to your local authorised dealer or find a trusted secondary market watch dealer.
